CONFIDENCE is one of the most important things for any professional athlete – with it you can be a world-beater and without it you can play like a stranger to yourself.

The way Everton FC took Newcastle apart on Sunday was a performance fuelled by sheer confidence – the Blues throbbed with it.

When I was playing, if you had a string of two or three bad games you felt like the weight of the world was on your shoulders.

I know for out-of-form strikers they would dread chances coming up in case they missed.

With me, if I was flying I’d be up and down the flank getting crosses in and you felt like you could do anything. That’s life!

But Everton have a great balance at the moment, and it all came to a joyous conclusion against Alan Pardew’s side – it was great to watch and relish.

Newcastle have achieved a lot this season, they have some superb players and Everton managed to make them look ordinary for large parts of the game, which of course they’re not.

You got the impression the Everton players wanted to produce a good performance for the fans and sign off a topsy-turvy season in an upbeat way.

David Moyes was right when he said his side played like top four contenders.
