THE defeat at Sunderland was described as the end of Everton’s top four hopes, but if I’m honest I don’t think they ever really had any.

I’d warrant a lot of fans never thought it was possible if they were being realistic.

The points gap between the Blues and clubs with far bigger squads was too much from the start.

As much as it’s a bitter pill to swallow, Everton may have to forget Europe now and think about finishing sixth – and above Liverpool for the second season running.

You never start a season with the ambition to finish above your local rivals; you start a season wanting to win something or get into Europe, but Everton might have to be content with a shot at city supremacy the way the table is shaping up.

People will therefore point to the derby as being a crucial fixture but I think this weekend’s round of games will have more of a bearing on what happens.

If Everton can get three points they will have a healthier gap on the Reds and it will mean they can go to Anfield with far less pressure on them to get a first victory there under David Moyes.

It is a shame that European football may not happen at all, but I do wonder how much players actually want to take part in it with the Thursday and Sunday games and the relative lack of financial incentive for their clubs compared to the Champions League.

I must admit I wasn’t surprised that getting a result at the Stadium of Light proved too much for the Toffees.

Sunderland are really fired-up at the moment, and they are playing with that extra drive under a new manager who has got them champing at the bit.
