The funeral of former Everton striker Dave Hickson, who died at the age of 83, has taken place in Liverpool.

The Salford-born footballer, who played for the side in the 1940s and 50s, was known as the Cannonball Kid.

His cortege passed Everton’s Goodison Park stadium on the way to the service at Liverpool Cathedral.

Former Toffees striker Graeme Sharp said Hickson, who also had spells with Liverpool and Tranmere Rovers, would have “run through a wall for Everton”.

Hickson, who scored 111 goals for the Toffees in two spells at the club, also played for Aston Villa and Huddersfield Town, but was best known for his time with Everton.

He was inducted into the Everton Hall of Fame in 2000.

Sharp said that the forward had “a special affinity to Goodison Park and the faithful had an affinity to Dave”.

“They realised he was one of their own because he epitomised everything that an Everton supporter is – passionate and willing to give everything to the club.”

Former Everton midfielder Peter Reid said his father called Hickson “brilliant”.

“He said he was a top player and hard as nails.

“He was so gentle off the pitch but when he put his boots and his shirt on, he was a winner.”
