Back in the day – a nostalgic glance at the weekend’s matches

Saturday 3pm – Everton v Fulham – betting odds: EFC 17/20 Draw 23/10 Fulham 4/1 – more bets

EVERTON kicked off the 1963/64 season against Fulham at Goodison Park having put four past the Cottagers the previous May to clinch the league title (pictured above).

FA Cup winners Manchester United had suffered the same fate at Goodison just a week before in the days when the Charity Shield match was still played on club grounds and the champions got their new campaign off to a great start when Alec Young’s cross was deflected by defender Bobby Keetch past Fulham keeper Tony Macedo.

Alex Scott added a second after the interval and Derek Temple completed a 3-0 win for Harry Catterick’s side.

Saturday 5.30pm – Norwich v Liverpool – betting odds: Norwich 3/1 Draw 12/5 LFC EVS – more bets

LIVERPOOL FC travelled to Norwich on the first day of April 1989 with their trophy hopes boosted by an electrifying run of form that had seen them win every game apart from away draws at Sheffield Wednesday and Newcastle since a New Year’s Day defeat at Manchester United.

At the end of February, Liverpool had been 19 points behind leaders Arsenal but the deficit was now down to five and they still had a game in hand over the Gunners, with George Graham’s side due to visit Anfield before the end of the month – the champions also knew they could move to within a point of second-placed Norwich if they won at Carrow Road.

The Canaries had won at Anfield earlier in the season and had stayed in title contention all season but Ronnie Whelan’s first-half goal was enough to clinch victory in Norfolk to keep Kenny Dalglish’s side ticking over ahead of league clashes with Sheffield Wednesday and Millwall and the forthcoming FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough.
