MERSEYSIDE football fans began their exodus to London early as they headed off to the FA Cup semi-final.

Tens of thousands of Liverpool and Everton FC supporters will set off at dawn on Sarurday while thousands more left on Friday.

At Lime Street station yesterday morning, hundreds of Blues and Reds supporters were waiting for their trains to the capital.

Everton season-ticket holder John Quirk, who was staying at the Barbacoa Thistle, near Euston, was part of a group of eight Blues fans.

The 47-year-old, of Childwall, said: “We have the Runcorn rule, which means we cannot drink until after Runcorn station!

“We will have a good laugh on the way and I hope it is as good as 1986 and 1989. I know we lost then but the atmosphere was great.

“There was no trouble and everyone was mixing. That is what we want to happen this time. I am nervous and excited, but we’ll win 3-0.”

Matthew Downing, 18, from Kirkby, said: “I am looking forward to this game more than the semi-final against Man United in 2009. To get one over on my Red mates would be fantastic.”

Liverpool fanatics Barry and Stephen Young, from Old Swan, who were staying at the Travelodge on London’s North Circular Road, were in a confident mood.
