EVERTON FC’s strong start to the Premier League campaign continued as they swept to a deserved 3-0 win over 10-man Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium.
First-half goals from Victor Anichebe and Kevin Mirallas – his first league strike for the club – gave David Moyes’ side an advantage they would not relinquish.
Marouane Fellaini added a third after half time as the home side ended the game a man light following substitute Nathan Dyer’s red card.Moyes made three changes from the team which had drawn 2-2 with Newcastle on Monday night, with Anichebe replacing the injured Nikica Jelavic in attack, and Seamus Coleman also making his first Premier League start of the season.
John Heitinga was preferred to Sylvain Distin at the heart of defence.And it was the visitors who started the game brightly, with home goalkeeper Michel Vorm forced into three saves inside the opening three minutes, denying Anichebe and Mirallas (twice).
There was controversy on 11 minutes as Ashley Williams brought down Anichebe when the Everton striker looked to be clear on goal.
Referee Anthony Taylor showed only a yellow card to the home skipper, with the subsequent free kick wasted.
Pablo Hernandez volleyed Swansea’s first chance wide on the quarter-hour mark, but it would be Everton who went ahead on 22 minutes through Anichebe.
Fellaini, a menace as ever, was able to control Leighton Baines’ diagonal free kick into the box, and then forced the ball past Alan Tate, albeit with the aid of an arm, for Anichebe to dispatch a close-range volley past Vorm with his left-foot.
Swansea struggled to get any kind of rhythm going in the opening half hour, as the visitors dominated, but they went close to a leveller on 33 minutes as Hernandez clipped the ball over a stranded Tim Howard, only for Phil Jagielka to head off the line.
Michu then headed over from close range, whilst Ki Sung-Yeung went close with a beautifully-struck 25-yarder that whistled just wide as the home side finished the half strongly.
Yet it would be Everton who would grab a second goal before the break, with the ball worked from back to front superbly, culminating in Steven Pienaar picking out Mirallas, who forced the ball in after Vorm had turned his initial effort onto the crossbar.
