Roberto Martinez ensured Everton’s #BlueCrimbo campaign reached a heart-warming climax on Friday when the Blues boss surprised another very special supporter.

The Goodison chief visited the home of 93-year-old staunch Evertonian Annie Carson to round-up the Club’s week-long series of street parties to honour five of the most deserving fans.

The unwitting Annie was greeted at her door, in Craine Close, Anfield, by Martinez, who presented her with a raft of gifts from the Club and then spent time listening to her stories of Everton days gone by.

“I was gobsmacked,” Annie said from the Christmas grotto which had been erected outside her house. “I didn’t know what was going on. I didn’t know anything about it but I have got my Everton colours on!

“This season has been great – up until now. I don’t care who scores and who doesn’t as long as we get the points. I don’t have a favourite player, they are all doing well and hopefully we can get a trophy this season.

“Alan Ball was my favourite player of all time – and Dixie as well.”

Martinez was delighted to spread even more festive Everton cheer.

“It is incredible,” he beamed. “We wanted to surprise Annie but she surprised me with all of her knowledge and passion. She is 93 and a true Evertonian so it is great. She rightly says that we have done well – so far – so we can’t drop the standards in the second half of the season.”

Annie started attending matches when she was a girl and fondly remembers a host of legendary players gracing the Goodison turf, including Dean, Alex Young and Joe Royle.

She remains a regular visitor to Goodison Park, not so much for the football these days, but to enjoy a game of Blue Bingo staged by the Club’s official charity, Everton in the Community. The event is enjoyed by nearly 200 older people living in the area every month and offers them the chance to meet up with old and new friends and stop them becoming isolated.

Annie is a much loved figure in her community and well known in the area and so her friends John Newton and Dorothy Fletcher were only too happy to help plan this fantastic surprise.
