We’re all used to seeing pictures of footballers strutting their stuff on the pitch but sometimes the most interesting photographs are taken when they’ve taken their boots off.

We’ve been scouring the archives for shots of what our Merseyside stars, and players from further afield, get up to away from matchday and they make for fascinating viewing.

You can see the stars on holiday, on honeymoon and with their hair down, including Bobby Charlton having a relaxing game of cricket the day before playing for England in the 1966 World Cup Final.

There are some fantastic Merseyside match-ups like Bill Shankly with Red Rum and Brian Labone with Bessie Braddock, while a fantastic shot of Spurs star Ossie Ardiles with his two kids shows where the balance of footballing power in 1980s lay.
