Garth Crooks’s team of the week

Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool all picked up maximum points on a weekend when Wigan and Norwich pulled off important victories.

But there was disappointment for Tottenham and Blackburn, who were both beaten in dramatic matches on Sunday.

Swansea City

He has only gone and done it again. Vorm’s superb save from Clint Dempsey’s spot-kick was the turning point in the match and denied Fulham a share of the spoils. If the Dutch keeper continues to produce performances like this, he will be a wanted man.

Did you know? Vorm is one of four players to save two Premier League penalties this season (along with Ali Al-Habsi, Wayne Hennessey and Tim Howard).

Tottenham Hotspur

I can’t remember when I’ve seen a right-back put in so many devastating balls across the opposition goalmouth without one cross being converted. Against Stoke, Walker put in another outstanding performance without one Tottenham striker putting the finishing touch to such telling deliveries. Reminiscent of the great German full-back Manfred Kaltz.

Did you know? Walker has made more tackles (29) than any other Spurs defender in the league this season.

Liverpool

Anyone who is partly responsible for keeping Jamie Carragher out of the side must be either an excellent defender or in great form. I think Agger falls into both categories. Didn’t give QPR a sniff.

Did you know? Agger has started Liverpool’s last six league matches; he has not started seven in a row within a season since December 2009.

Stoke

What this lad lacks in ability he makes up for in sheer commitment. A rock in the Stoke defence and a threat in the Spurs penalty area. He was involved in Stoke’s every move against Spurs. Referee Chris Foy missed his handball on the line but you can’t blame Shawcross for that!

Did you know? Shawcross has made the most clearances in the Premier League this season (170), 27 more than any other player (Younes Kaboul).

Glen’s game has been full of confidence. A very solid defensive display by the full-back considering the setback they suffered against Fulham earlier in the week. An important clean sheet for the Reds.

Did you know? Liverpool have conceded half as many goals per game when he has started in the Premier League this season (0.57) as when he hasn’t (1.13).

Manchester United

When you consider their embarrassing exit from the Champions League, Manchester United came back with a vengeance. Nani was immense. In a matter of days he put that abject performance against Basel behind him and produced a display against Wolves worthy of his status and all in a matter of days. Still life in United yet.

Did you know? Since the start of last season, only Robin van Persie (44) and Wayne Rooney (35) have been involved in more Premeir League goals (14 goals, 19 assists).

Liverpool

The debate about Charlie Adam’s impact at Liverpool continued on Football Focus this weekend when Paul Ince and Martin Keown renewed hostilities on set. Ince has been less impressed than Keown and thinks the Scot has to do more to establish himself as a regular in the Liverpool line-up. But even Ince must have raised an eyebrow when the naturally left-footed Adam looked up and delivered the perfect cross with his weaker foot for Luis Suarez to head home. He’s growing with every game.

Did you know? Adam has the joint-most assists from set-pieces in the Premier League this season (three).

Wigan Athletic

For the second time this season Victor Moses has made my Team of the Week. The former Crystal Palace eagle is beginning to find his Premier League wings. In a highly competitive encounter Moses not only produced a sensational goal to put his team back in the game but was brought down by West Brom’s Steven Reid for the penalty that resulted in Wigan’s impressive win. A victory for Moses in more ways than one.

Did you know? Before his goal this weekend, Moses had had more shots without scoring than any Premier League player this season (45).

Liverpool

Whatever you think of Suarez, you can be sure that controversies and headlines don’t bother him in the slightest. He never stopped running and was always a threat to the QPR defence. He might go to ground easily but he’s always good for a goal. Lost his marker brilliantly to score from a Charlie Adam cross.

Did you know? Suarez has had the most shots in the Premier League this season (69).

Norwich City

For a player who has spent most of his football career in the lower leagues, he looks every bit the Premier League striker every time he takes to the field. Whenever the ball entered the Newcastle penalty area, Holt was causing them problems. Admittedly there was no Fabricio Coloccini or Steven Taylor to oppose him, but he still took advantage ruthlessly.

Did you know? Holt has had the joint-most headed shots on target in the Premier League this season (eight, level with Andy Carroll).

Arsenal

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, Robin van Persie is playing the kind of football we all knew he was capable of. But I doubt whether we would have been so unanimous about the level of maturity he has shown in doing it. He showed tremendous patience as Arsenal missed chance after chance, only to convert arguably the most difficult one of all with the most exquisite volley. Last week, I predicted that Yaya Toure would win the PFA Player of the Year trophy. I think I’m going to have to eat my hat after all and watch Van Persie lift the award and, at this rate, the Football Writers’ one too.

Did you know? Van Persie is only the fifth Premier League player to reach 15 goals from his first 15 appearances of a season (Andy Cole 1993-94, Les Ferdinand 1995-96, Thierry Henry 2001-02 and Alan Shearer 2003-04).
