Woods made over 603 appearances in his club career between 1976 and 1998

Former England stopper Chris Woods has been named as the United States’ national team’s goalkeeping coach.

Woods took part in a US team training session on Monday afternoon, ahead of an exhibition game against Ecuador on 12 October.

The 51-year-old has been Everton’s goalkeeper coach for 13 years, where he works with USA number one Tim Howard.

Toffees manager David Moyes has given permission for Woods to take the job while continuing in his Goodison role.

Woods set a British record between November 1986 to January 1987, while at Rangers, by playing 1196 consecutive minutes of competitive football without conceding a goal.



The former Norwich and Rangers stopper made 43 appearances for England between 1985 and 1993, making both his debut and his final appearance against the United States.

Woods has been appointed by new USA manager Jurgen Klinsmann.

US Soccer Federation spokesman Neil Buethe confirmed that a formal contract with Woods was still being worked on.
