EVERTON FC’S promising young Greek striker Apostolos Vellios is aiming to be a surprise package in the Premier League next season – after being named Everton’s Young Player of the Season.

Vellios didn’t feature in David Moyes’ first team after February, the arrival of the prolific Nikica Jelavic pushing him further back in the strikers’ pecking order at Goodison.

But earlier in the campaign he made an instant impact, scoring three times and earning the curious statistic of having a better goals per minutes on the pitch ratio than every top flight striker apart from Papiss Cisse.

Now he is hoping to build on that progress next season.

“I am really happy (with the Young Player award),” he said. “I want to say a big thanks to all the Blues who voted for me.

“I’m so proud. It has given me more confidence for the future to be better.

“I looked at the names of the previous winners and it’s a big honour that my name will be there with them.

“It was a good season for me, but I think I have many surprises for next season.”
