Everton want Wigan’s James McCarthy

Everton FC boss Roberto Martinez has made a £12m offer for his former midfielder James McCarthy but has been told that the DW Stadium want to make £20m from any potential sale of the Republic of Ireland international.

Martinez has also targeted Juventus forward Alessandro Matri but has been told that the Goodison Park side would have to spend £14m to land the Italian international, again a fee that could be considered more than just a little inflated.

Meanwhile, Leighton Baines is set to sign a new Everton deal if Manchester United do not meet the ­asking price before the start of the ­season.

Elsewhere, reports suggest Baines will crack if Manchester United increase their offer to around £18million.

Everton are said to be weighing up a move for Toby Alderweireld, according to sources in Belgium. The highly rated Ajax man has been the subject of much interest from England this year, with Norwich and Liverpool also keen on him.
