Everton have been contacted by Joey Barton’s agent about signing the club.

Barton is back at Queens Park Rangers after a year in exile on loan at French side Marseille, and Hoops boss Harry Redknapp is even considering playing him in Saturday’s Championship season opener against Sheffield Wednesday.

But the fiery midfielder’s agent has made contact with the Goodison club’s new manager Roberto Martinez to ask if they want him.

Barton grew up on Merseyside as an Everton fan and is dreaming of a sensational switch in his characteristically unpredictable but single-minded style.

Talks about a massive pay-off at QPR to make a return to Marseille financially viable are faltering, leaving Barton to consider his dream option.

And the 30-year-old has now told the Toffees that he would accept half of his current £70,000-a-week salary to make it happen.

Barton’s agent Willie McKay contacted manager Roberto Martinez, currently on tour in America with his new squad, to tell him that Barton was keen to join the club he supported as a boy and would be willing to take a pay cut to make it happen.

McKay said: ‘I spoke to Roberto to see if he would be interested in taking Joey. I told him that Joey would love to join Everton and that they are the only club he willing to lose money to play for.’

In other Everton transfer news, the Blues are preparing a £15m offer for Wigan star James McCarthy even after being told the midfielder will not be allowed to leave for less than £20m.

The Republic of Ireland international was subject of two offers from the Toffees earlierthis summer with both being rebuffed by Wigan chairman Dave Whelan

The Latics owner is holding out for £20m, however Roberto Martinez is hoping to tempt his former boss into selling the player with an offer just shy of the asking price.
