Gary Medel, Everton
Everton targeting Chilean International

Reports have linked Sevilla midfielder Gary Medel with a transfer to Everton FC. The Toffees have been looking for a midfielder in the transfer market with the future of Marouane Fellaini in doubt and the recent retirement of Phil Neville. Everton had been pursuing Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy but look to have been put-off by his price-tag.

It has been reported that manager Roberto Martinez has now focused his attentions on Chilean International Gary Medel. A price of £6million has been quoted for the defensive midfielder with Sevilla willing to part with the player due to the club’s poor financial state. It has been said that Roberto Martinez is desperate to raise the funds in order to purchase the player.

Medel is known as ‘The Pitbull’ or “The Chilean Gattuso” due to his all-action committed displays on the pitch. The 25-year-old started his career at Universidad Católica and then moved to Argentine side Boca Juniors. The defensive midfielder then made his first foray into Europe by joining Sevilla in 2011. In his 2-and-a-half year spell at the Andalusian club, Medel established himself as an integral part of the side making 76 appearances and scoring 8 goals. Medel has 51 caps for the Chilean National team and was named Chilean Footballer of the Year in 2008.

Everton have so far completed the signings of Spanish forward Gerard Deulofeu from Barcelona, Spanish goalkeeper Joel Robles from Atletico Madrid, Ivory Coast forward Arouna Kone and Paraguayan defender Antolin Alcaraz from Wigan.
