Moyes delighted with deserved derby success

Everton manager David Moyes said his team deserved to take the spotlight from neighbours Liverpool with their 2-0 derby victory.Liverpool have been the centre of media attention in recent days and their new American owners were at Goodison Park. But goals from Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta ensured it was Everton’s day. “I think the media attention was all directed towards Liverpool and maybe today the attention was on Everton,” Moyes told BBC Sport. “I think we deserved it after the performance and the attitude.” The apparent end to the Liverpool ownership saga with Friday’s takeover by American John W. Henry’s NESV group did not appear to sidetrack rivals Everton.

Hodgson unsure how Liverpool lost

Sunday’s victory brought to an end a run of three successive Merseyside derby defeats for Moyes and lifted his side away from the lower reaches of the table and into 11th. “I’ve not beaten Liverpool enough in my time here,” said Moyes. “I think there were one or two circumstances other than just the game. “After the stuff that’s been going on this week we concentrated on ourselves and I think it paid off.” It was a much-needed win as Everton have made another sluggish start to the season, a trend Moyes is trying to address. “It’s something we’ve tried to change and start better,” he said. “In the end we’ve tended to finish near the top so let’s see where we finish this season.”

The start has not been helped by injuries, with Leon Osman the latest addition to the list of injured midfielders following the Liverpool game, and Moyes praised one young player who is making the most of the opportunity in the first team. “Seamus Coleman, £60,000 [the fee Everton paid to sign him from Sligo Rovers], playing in a derby and does as well as anybody,” said Moyes. “You give people opportunities and they take them. “He’s a right-back but has been playing right-midfield as I do not have anybody else on the right side at this time.”
