WITH HIS pace, versatility and attacking instinct Seamus Coleman is every inch the modern Premier League full-back.
And on the day he put pen to paper on a new five year contract, the Donegal-born player has every chance of becoming Everton’s long-term right back.
The 24-year-old will realise that his competitors for the role, Phil Neville and Tony Hibbert, are both approaching the end of their impressive careers, while he has his best years ahead of him.
This new deal is a strong indicator of David Moyes’ faith in a young man he plucked from the relative obscurity of League of Ireland football in 2009.
Coleman is fully aware that he is still learning, but he showed during his recent run in the side that he is a capable defender who is equal to the task of stopping the Premier League’s myriad of exciting attackers.
There are still some rough edges, and Coleman has proven that he has learned from costly errors against Reading earlier in the season but he has the potential to build a good dynamic with Kevin Mirallas down Everton’s right flank which could one day rival the left-sided threat of Leighton Baines and Steven Pienaar.
The £60,000 Everton paid for him remains one of the smartest bit of business Moyes has done during his time on Merseyside.
