League One Brentford knocked Premier League strugglers Everton out of the Carling Cup on penalties.Jermaine Beckford and Phil Jagielka both missed their spot-kicks for the Toffees to give the Bees a famous win. Everton had taken an early lead when Seamus Coleman slotted in only for Gary Alexander to equalise when he powered in a header from 12 yards. Charlie MacDonald had a penalty saved for the home side in normal time but the Bees still managed to go on to win. Brentford’s victory sparked a pitch invasion by joyous fans, while the defeat will only add to a dismal mood around Everton after their poor start to the season. The Toffees had been booed by their fans after a 1-0 defeat by Newcastle in the Premier League on Saturday and were looking to atone at Griffin Park.
The Merseysiders started off promisingly enough as youngster Coleman scored his first goal for the club after just six minutes. The visitors were dominating the game and Ayegbeni Yakubu should have added to their lead but the Nigeria striker failed to hit the target with a free header from close range.

The Bees slowly settled and MacDonald headed over before the home side had shouts for a penalty waved away after Diniyar Bilyaletdinov ran into the back of Myles Weston. Marouane Fellaini glanced an acute flick against the Brentford post and Yakubu saw keeper Richard Lee save his long range strike as the visitors lacked a cutting edge for which they were eventually punished. The pacy Weston was a thorn in Everton’s side and he crossed for Alexander, who steered a powerful header past goalkeeper Jan Mucha. Brentford had a great chance to take the lead when they earned a penalty for a Coleman foul on Weston. MacDonald stepped up to take the spot-kick only to see it saved by Mucha, who dived low to his left to keep his side level.

At the other end, keeper Lee was in inspired form and he excellently kept out a Bilyaletdinov header and saved from Magaye Gueye before a Fellaini header was cleared off the Brentford goal-line. Everton boss David Moyes had sent on substitutes Mikel Arteta and Steven Pienaar to try to overcome Brentford but, after a pulsating end-to-end climax to the tie, the game went to extra-time and penalties. It was 3-3 in the shoot-out when Beckford missed and, with Jagielka needing to score to keep his side in it, his effort struck the post and sent Brentford into the fourth round.
