Back in the day – a nostalgic glance at the weekend’s matches

Saturday 3pm – West Brom v Liverpool – betting odds: WBA 10/3 Draw 13/5 LFC 17/20 – more bets

Liverpool travelled to the Hawthorns during Bob Paisley’s last campaign as manager already boasting a ten-point lead at the top of the First Division with barely half the season played.

A Baggies side including former Everton winger Peter Eastoe, Cyrille Regis and Martin Jol gave a below-par Reds a tough examination on a chilly Black Country afternoon but paid their price for not taking their chances when they were punished late on in trademark fashion.

Ian Rush lurked on the shoulder of the last defender and took David Hodgson’s pass into stride before flashing a 90th minute winner beyond goalkeeper Paul Barron.

Monday 8pm – Everton v Man Utd – betting odds: EFC 10/3 Draw 12/5 Man Utd 10/11 – more bets

Harry Catterick’s men entertained Sir Matt Busby’s side on the opening day of the 1967/68 campaign looking to make a statement against the team that had won the previous season’s league title and would nine months later become the first English team to lift the European Cup.

Alan Ball gave the Blues an early lead, tapping in from close range after Joe Royle’s knock-back and added a second midway through the second half after Colin Harvey’s surge tore the visitor’s defence open.

A shell-shocked United were then completely undone by some Alec Young magic as the Scottish forward expertly controlled Ball’s pass and weaved between two defenders before smashing a magnificent finish beyond Stepney.

Bobby Charlton added a late consolation but the Goodison faithful went home happy with their first taste of live football after the long summer break.
