Back in the day – a nostalgic glance at the weekend’s matches

Saturday 5.30pm – Everton FC v Tottenham – bettings odds:   EFC 15/8 Draw 23/10 Spurs 6/4 – more bets

MENTION Graeme Sharp and volley and most Evertonians’ minds will be drawn back to Anfield in 1984.

The Dumbarton-born Scot gave warning of his capabilities however when Cup winners Spurs visited Goodison in January 1982.

Finally earning his stripes under Howard Kendall after arriving from Scotland in 1980, the Scot thundered home a volley early on at the Park End that left Ray Clemence as helpless as his Anfield successor Bruce Grobbelaar would be two years later.

Ricky Villa’s strike earned Spurs a point that day but the 30,717 in attendance that day were given a memory to cherish.

Saturday 3pm – Sunderland v Liverpool FC – bettings odds:   Sunderland 3/1 Draw 23/10 LFC Evens – more bets

LIVERPOOL travelled to Roker Park in October 1981 looking to regain their title after an unfamiliar fifth placed finish the season before.

Bob Paisley’s men had suffered an indifferent start to the campaign, lying in the bottom half of the table as they headed to the north east, and it was not until after Christmas and Graeme Souness’ succession to club captain that they really clicked into gear, ultimately clinching the title on the last day against Spurs.

It was the Edinburgh-born midfielder who provided the inspiration on Wearside however, firing home a rocket of a free kick to open the scoring before Terry McDermott completed a 2-0 win.
