Everton winger Aiden McGeady has been warned he will need to take a significant pay cut to secure a return to Celtic.

The Republic of Ireland international’s two-year stay with the Blues has petered out with Roberto Martinez affording him only 45 minutes of playing time so far this season.

Celtic are prepared to offer McGeady a chance to revive his career ahead of Euro 2016 but manager Ronny Deila has told the 29-year-old that he would need to take a hit on his current Goodison Park salary, understood to be £60,000 per week.

He said: “We would not be able to pay the salary that McGeady is on at the moment.

“The difference is so unbelievably big that there is no chance. Our wage structure would be broken 10 times over if we did that.

“We have tried before to get that type of player, but they get three times the salary at other places.”
