A rolling stone gathers no moss and Jonathan Moss gathers plenty of red cards – but the Sunderland-born official seemingly doesn’t deem strangling and headbutting worthy of such reprimand.

The Yorkshire-based referee, who takes charge of Everton’s game away at Queens Park Rangers on Sunday, has shown eight this season – only one referee, Craig Pawson, has shown more.

One of Moss’ red cards came in the Blues’ 1-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge as Gareth Barry was sent off for two bookings.

But his performance with the whistle was lambasted for not taking action on Branislav Ivanovic after a clash with James McCarthy, with the Serbian wrapping his arm around the neck of McCarthy, before sending his head into the Irish international.

Moss, who saw the incident, took no action against Ivanovic and instead booked McCarthy for his involvement.

Willian would go on to score no more than a minute later to condemn the Blues to defeat.

That was Moss’ last game in charge with the Blues. He also took charge of the 6-3 home defeat to Chelsea earlier in the season, as well as the 3-0 loss to Southampton in December.
