Everton FC remain in the lower reaches of the Premier League after a narrow 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

In an action-packed game, United took the lead through Angel Di Maria, before the Blues were awarded a penalty on the stroke of half time. Leighton Baines missed, however, to end his perfect record from the spot in the Premier League.

Roberto Martinez’s side still equalised through Steven Naismith, but Di Maria’s scuffed shot was turned in by Radamel Falcao for his first goal in a United shirt.

Everton pushed for an equaliser and were twice denied by David De Gea – his second save, a spectacular fingertip over the bar from Bryan Oviedo, coming with full time looming.

The Toffees’ misery was compounded with an injury to John Stones, who was stretchered off with ankle ligament damage.
