Baines: No World Cup hangover

Leighton Baines insists Everton’s slow start to the season is not down to a tiredness hangover from the World Cup this summer.

“I personally didn’t feel any lag (after the World Cup), but Rom came back later than myself, Jags (Jagielka) and Ross (Barkley), so he started the season probably having only been with us a week,” he said.

“Bear in mind some of the other lads had been back training seven weeks, so in that respect it is only just starting to level out really and we hope we will get him scoring goals because he is vital for us.”

Phil Jagielka may have notched another goal yesterday but he recognises the importance of keeping a clean sheet at the other end.

“I think one goal is normally a rich vein of goalscoring form for me!,” Jagielka joked.

“To get three in a month is fantastic but we were getting fantastic balls put in today and it makes it easier.

“I think it was Bainesy’s right foot that swung it in, Rom took everyone out and it was nice for me to be able to nod it in.

“But it was important for us to keep a clean sheet today. We kept a lot of clean sheets last year and it was something we were very proud of.

“It’s something for us to build off.”

Lee Carsley is excellent on Ross Barkley in his Sunday ECHO column.

The former Blues midfield writes: “It was though the youngster hadn’t been away.

“There’s no doubt Barkley is a class player. His confidence is sky high, he knows the manager rates him, the fans love him and his team-mates enjoy playing alongside him.

“The team have needed his energy and enthusiasm. He brought extra impetus to our play. It has given everybody a lift.”

No better place to start than with the main man Greg O’Keeffe’s analysis of the game. “After spending the opening months of this campaign looking disjointed and sluggish, the Toffees were back to their scintillating best, reminiscent of the side that thrilled during Roberto Martinez’s maiden campaign,” he writes.

Just how impressive were the Blues yesterday?
