Horne: Don’t forget Lukaku is just 21

Barry Horne sings the praises of Romelu Lukaku in his column today – and he says it is easy to forget he’s just 21 years old.

Horne says: “To have scored 100 career goals when you’re still 21 years of age is quite an achievement even if he has missed quite a few chances at times in recent weeks and such profligacy proved costly against Leicester City.

“Because he’s been around a bit and he’s such an imposing physical presence it’s easy to forget that Lukaku is only 21.

“While there are examples of players who are 21 being established professionals, most at that age in any position are still some way from being at their best or indeed the finished article.”

Phil Kirkbride: Everton will need home comforts against Kiev

Phil Kirkbride says Everton must take advantage of home advantage in this week’s Royal Blue column. Our Toffees reporter says that Everton must ensure they aren’t heading to Kiev looking for a victory.

BSC Young Boys v Everton – UEFA Europa League Second Round First Leg – Stade de Suisse, Bern, Switzerland Everton fans before the game

Phil writes: “Roberto Martinez wanted the second leg to be at the Old Lady but, instead, Everton face Dynamo in their back yard on March 19.

“At NSC Olimpiyskiy this season, the Ukrainian Premier League leaders are unbeaten.

“Eleven wins and three draws in the league have been backed up by four wins in the Europa League at home.

“They are, to put it mildly, formidable on their own patch.

“And where Everton tore through Young Boys’ winning European record last week, Kiev’s stronghold looks like being harder to crack.”

Joe Rimmer

Do you agree with Roberto? And why haven’t Everton reached the heights of last season in the Premier League?

@JoeRimmer88 I would agree with that. I remember watching that game thinking we could beat anyone if we played like that all the time.

Good morning!
Joe Rimmer

Good morning and welcome to the Everton FC liveblog. I’m Joe Rimmer and I’ll be here throughout the day to bring you all the latest news and views on the Blues, as well as all the best build-up to tomorrow’s clash with Arsenal at the Emirates.

I’ll be back in just a moment – for now here’s today’s top story and Roberto Martinez says last season’s draw away to Arsenal was his best performance as Blues boss.

“You don’t want to measure a good performance without winning the game but from a technical point of view it was a fantastic performance,” the Blues manager said.

“The way we kept the ball and the way we imposed ourselves in possession was fantastic. In football you always need to look for what is missing if you cannot win the game but the good thing about that performance was that even when we went 1-0 down we showed an incredible character to come back and get a positive result.

“We played a very good Arsenal side, eye-to-eye and technically our performance was outstanding.”
