John Stones is desperate to make up for lost time after spending three months of the season out injured.

He told Phil Kirkbride: “Unfortunately I got this injury but it has made me stronger, more knowledgeable about the game because when I’ve been on the sidelines watching the game the gaffer told me to use the time wisely.

“He said it would make me a better person and I really think it has.

“I’ve come back hungry and wanting to play. I’ll try and keep doing that.”

Roberto Martinez says he’s aware of the criticism of his side, and he adds that his team is determined to repay the fans’ faith in them by turning their season around.

“We need to look back at some of the big moments we had at the start of the season and we can’t forget that,” Martinez said.

“We will never stop trying to play football or being a very good team it is that in the last few weeks, results haven’t come our way.

“The Christmas period was very tough but we have come through that now.

“I am very positive and very much optimistic and, once again, that will be down to the support of our fans.

“Hopefully we can repay them.”
