Remember when there was actually a chance to draw breath between one football season ending and another beginning?

No, neither do we.

And less than 72 hours after England bring the curtain down on the 2014-15 campaign with their Euro 2016 qualifier in Slovenia, the anticipation for the new campaign will begin to ramp up with the release of the latest Premier League fixtures on Wednesday morning.

Fans on the Red half of Merseyside will already be aware their club has requested they play at least their first game away from home, with a suggestion it could be more.

And that will have implications on the other side of Stanley Park, with the prospect of Everton beginning the season with a glut of home fixtures.

Goodison was anything but a fortress last season. Rather than inspiring Roberto Martinez’s side, it instead too often prompted them to freeze, made stationary at first by the weight of expectation and then the fear of failure.

The 3-0 thumping of Manchester United aside, there were few home comforts with the Blues winning only three of their first 13 Goodison Premier League games before successive end-of-season losses to Sunderland and Tottenham Hotspur.

With some fans muttering over the lack of transfer activity – even though the window doesn’t actually open until the end of the month – it’s clear patience isn’t a commodity in great supply among sections of the Blues support.

There’s still plenty of time for that to change before the start of the season.

But whether Martinez fields a new-look side or is compelled to largely maintain the status quo, the likelihood is their initial steps will primarily be taken under the glare of the home crowd.

Remembering how to make the most of Goodison will be key to avoiding a repeat of last season’s difficult beginnings.

Has Eto’o mystery been solved?

As sly digs go, it was right up there with the best of them.

Asked about the possibility Samuel Eto’o could bail from Sampdoria after barely six months, the club’s president Massimo Ferrero said: “I think this little bird is destined to fly towards other shores.

“He is a great champion but if he wants to leave, then he can follow his heart… and his wallet.”

Evertonians will know all about the increasing tendency of Eto’o to flit between clubs with the Cameroonian having lasted even less amount of time at Goodison earlier in the campaign.

His departure was always a somewhat curious one.

But, if Ferrero’s inference is to be believed, matters could have suddenly become a lot clearer.

Golf needs characters to lead them out of Woods

There was once a time when you could barely move a few miles before encountering a new golf course being constructed.

Yet over the last few years, the number of amateurs playing the sport in this country has been falling.

A decrease in disposable income has no doubt contributed to the trend.

But what also hasn’t helped is the current lack of box office at the highest level.

Rory McIlroy is a notable exception. Too many other golfers, though, are interchangeable, supremely talented yet lacking charisma.

How the authorities must hope Tiger Woods – who last week shot the worst round of his professional career – can rediscover former glories.

The Ryder Cup still captures the imagination of the average sports fan. So too the Open and the Masters.

But how many are aware the US Open, one of the four Majors, takes place next week?

With BBC effectively giving up on covering golf, Sky will tighten its stranglehold on the sport.

They do a great job, but to far fewer viewers.

And unless the new Woods emerges from the pack, that number is only going to decrease.
