GOAL! Krasnodar 1-1 Everton (Eto’o 82)

The home side take a deserved lead! Dreadful defending from Everton as Ahmedov clips a ball into the box from the right. Jagielka looks to flick the ball away with his right foot but only succeeds in flicking it past Stones and into the path of Ari, who tucks it away with little fuss.

“While I agree with you about winning a cup for a cups sake, the problem with this competition is that Uefa have ruined the thing by allowing the Champions league losers to drop in,” writes Sam Fox. “You slog away for a year to qualify, then possibly go through a round or two of qualifiers, and six group games, only for the goal-posts to be shifted eight teams further down the line. As a Spurs fan, I’ve seen this happen year after year, and I just can’t get excited about the prospects of winning the thing until March or April.”

I agree with you here, Sam. And I just can’t see who benefits from it – most of the teams dropping out of the Champions League aren’t that bothered, it devalues the competition as a whole and it’s unfair on those who, as you say, might have begun their Europa League campaign in July. Presumably it’s a prestige thing – ie, the Champions League clubs dropping into it are an easier sell for TV companies. But it’s idiotic. The Champions League works brilliant, but Uefa have really made a mess of the secondary competition(s).

An email: “Not only is there European silverware at stake, this is the first season where winning the Europa League qualifies you for the Champions League,” writes Mischa Watson, “so arguably it should be Everton’s priority ahead of very tough fight for fourth place.”

That’s a very fair point. I do, though, dislike the Uefa Cup becoming a Champions League qualifying competition. Call me old-fashioned but I want to see clubs winning cups for the sake of winning cups, not for further gain somewhere down the line.

Preamble

It has probably been a pretty enjoyable week for Everton fans, most of whom are probable still seeing Phil Jagielka’s last-minute thunderbolt at Anfield on a permanent loop every time they close their eyes. It’s back to business this evening, though, the business in question being a tricky Europa League tie in southern Russia.

The Europa League has to be high on Roberto Martinez’s list of priorities this season. The battle for the top four looks perhaps more competitive than ever and, while they certainly shouldn’t give up on the league campaign, why not give the chance of some European silverware the importance it deserves. Everton showed against Wolfsburg that if they take it seriously they’ve got no need to fear anyone in this competition. And Martinez has named a squad that suggests he’s got his eyes on this particular prize.

Krasnodar? Who are they? Founded in 2008 – yes, 2008 – they were fifth placed side in the Russian Premier League last season. They beat Estonia’s Sillamäe Kalev 9-0 in the Europa League second qualifying round back in July, then Hungary’s Diosgyor 8-1 in the third qualifying round. “Meh” might be a fair response to those scorelines, but their play-off round victory over Real Sociedad served notice of some talent and they followed that up with a 1-1 in Lille in their opening group game. As such, they’re comfortably the highest scoring team in the competition so far.

Wigan fans might recognise a certain Andreas Granqvist in their ranks, while Marat Izmailov has been a solid performer around Europe for much of the last decade or so. And like many of Russia’s top sides they’re bolstered by a smattering of Brazilian flair, in this case the attacking duo of Ari and Wanderson.

TripAdviser tells me that Krasnodar is also home to one of the only surviving hyperboloid towers designed by Vladimir Shukhov, so that’s something for the travelling fans to take a look at pre- or post-match.

For the full skinny on the Russian side, though, you’ll want to take a look at Nick Ames’ excellent piece here.
