Roberto Martinez has urged his players to grasp the opportunity of making derby history today.
Everton are looking for their first win at Anfield since 1999, exactly 15 years to the day since Kevin Campbell’s solitary goal ensured a rare victory for the Toffees.
The Blues boss admits chances may be at a premium during the lunchtime showdown, but ordered his strikers not to fluff their lines in front of goal.
He said: “The main thing is that we are clinical in front of goal.
“If you look at the amount of chances we created in the last derby there were good chances to score goals and we didn’t take them. So that’s our focus.
“If you want to go there and get a win you need to be perfect.
“There’s no two ways about it, that’s what we’re striving towards. We know what’s required to get the win. We’ll be aiming for the complete performance.”
Everton made a habit of breaking unwanted records last term, most notably when they tasted triumph against Manchester United at Old Trafford for the first time in 20 years.
Now Martinez wants them to add another new chapter in the story of his reign.
“If we beat Liverpool it would be the same level as that game (at Old Trafford),” he said.
“You are looking to achieve as a team by reaching a certain level of understanding.
That demands a real togetherness. To reach big landmarks is important as you develop any way of playing as a team.
“When we went to the Emirates it was a big moment. When we went to Old Trafford it was a big moment.
“I do think that after 15 years we need to go somewhere like Anfield, be ourselves, and get a positive result.
“That’s something which is an aspiration of the group and it would be another important landmark to add to the list.”
Martinez acknowledged that both Merseyside giants have had fraught starts to their Premier League campaigns, but does not believe that will detract from the significance of the 223rd derby.
“The derby is an isolated game when you don’t take into account form,” he said.
“Both teams have had similar starts to the season. Outstanding form at times, look at the way Liverpool played at White Hart Lane or us against Wolfsburg.
“But we are both still working on certain things.
“It will be a huge footballing occasion and a big game for both teams given how we have started in the Premier League.”
