Roberto Martinez admits recruitment is a “priority” for Everton in the summer as they look to bounce back from the disappointment of this season.
The Blues boss has already been working on adding to his squad, with four new faces being targeted.
Martinez is keen to add a left-footed defender, two midfielders, and a winger, as Everton look to target quality over quantity. The Catalan is also eager to sign players with strong mentalities and, if possible, experience of playing in big-games.
With Everton having finished the season 11th in the Premier League table, and with at least four members of the squad – Sylvain Distin, Antolin Alcaraz, Christian Atsu and Aaron Lennon – leaving, Martinez knows that getting it right in the transfer market could be key, if the Toffees are to move back up the league next season.
“I think it is an important summer,” he said. “It becomes about recruitment and that’s the priority.
“I think we are very clear in what we need. We have found players that we want and it becomes a process about trying to make those targets a possibility and make them Everton players.
“We are very excited about the future. I think the work from this season has made us stronger and more mature.
“If anything, going through the difficulties of this campaign has made us hungrier for success. We want to give our fans something they can be extremely satisfied with, and clearly this summer the recruitment process is vital.”
Martinez has spoken at length about how a summer without a World Cup will help his side’s preparations for the new season, and believes it will assist with their summer transfer business too.
He said: “No tournament this summer does help. It will depend on the target, but obviously major tournaments always delay those sorts of situations.
“The value of the player in the market can be drastically changed by what happens in a major tournament. But now our business could happen in a much smoother manner, and we will try to do it as quickly as we can with some of our targets. Others we will try to bring in late because of the type of player that we need to bring in.”
