Leighton Baines insists it is time for the Everton FC squad to “go away and look at themselves” as they bid to arrest their alarming slump in form.

The Blues have won just one of their last seven Premier League games and slumped to a sorry 3-2 defeat at Newcastle United on Sunday.

Everton have slipped to 12th in the table and now boast the division’s second worst defence having shipped 31 goals in 19 matches.

Baines says the squad are hurting but believes the trip to Hull City on New Year’s Day presents Roberto Martinez’s side with the perfect chance to get back on track.

“Obviously, we’re down at the moment – we’re on a poor run and there is no sense in kidding ourselves,” said Baines.

“We’ve got to go away and look at ourselves because, at the moment, things aren’t going well but we’ll keep working as hard as we can to turn things around.”

Asked about the number of goals Everton have conceded this season, Baines said: “It’s clearly a problem and it’s something we need to improve on.

“We went a goal ahead and in those situations in the past, we’d go on from there but this season we haven’t been able to keep leads well enough. We’re letting sides back into games and that obviously changes the momentum in games.”

The England left-back continued: “We have to be concerned about it because, at the moment, we aren’t showing enough good signs of turning it around but Hull offers another opportunity to change that.

“It’s very important to start 2015 with a win and we’re looking at it as a chance to turn things around for us. We still think that if we can get back to the levels we set, next year can be a really good one for us.”
