Steven Pienaar needs to return to fitness before pre-season begins, says Roberto Martinez.
The South African playmaker returned to the Everton FC side against Swansea City after nearly four months out.
But Pienaar did not make the Blues squad for last weekend’s win over Burnley because of “muscular fatigue”.
Pienaar has suffered with a serious knee problem this season and Martinez says the 33-year-old has struggled to stay clear of injury.
But the Blues boss insists it is vital for Everton to make sure the midfielder has a clean bill of health heading into the summer programme.
“It was more muscular fatigue from the work he did at Swansea but it is going to be short-term,” Martinez said.
“We need to get him fit but it is not a big, big issue.
“His knee was a big problem and all of the problems that come from the mechanics of the knee.
“You get those seasons where you get one problem after another because you are trying to catch up.
“So we hope with a period in the summer we will be able to refresh and readjust him to get him ready for pre-season and set him up for a positive campaign next season.”
