Everton defender Shane Duffy is on the verge of completing a £1.5m switch to Blackburn Rovers.

The 22-year-old Republic of Ireland international spent last term on loan at Yeovil Town, and was hoping to use pre-season as a chance to figure in Roberto Martinez’s plans for the current Premier League campaign.

But with skipper Phil Jagielka and his fellow England rising star John Stones ahead of him in the pecking order, the Blues have allowed the Derry-born centre back to pursue first-team football in the Championship.

Duffy joined Everton’s academy in 2008 and was rated as a future first-team regular by David Moyes.

He indicated that faith had not been misplaced in 2011 when he replaced the injured Sylvain Distin at White Hart Lane and then started the next three games.

But future first team outings proved difficult to come by and although he progressed into Martin O’Neill’s full Republic of Ireland set-up earlier this year, he remained on loan at Yeovil for the entirety of the season, making 37 appearances.
