Everton manager Roberto Martinez was pleased with the hard-earned point in Lille which keeps his side top of Group H but was unhappy with the playing surface at Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

The Blues lead their section at the halfway stage with five points from three games – including two away matches – ahead of Wolfsburg on four points after their 4-2 win at Krasnodar last night, while Lille have three points and the Russians two.

Martinez said: “I thought it was a very pleasing clean sheet. We knew that Lille were going to throw everything at us and I thought we coped with that extremely well.

“I’m a little bit disappointed that the condition of the pitch didn’t allow us to be on the ball like we normally are and in all fairness I think it affected Lille as well.

“Maybe it doesn’t look like that from the camera view but the pitch was really difficult in terms of having good ability on the ball.

“Overall it’s another really good away performance, another very good away point and a really strong performance from everyone.”

We have almost run out of Everton bags.
