Tim Howard: A tricky night for goalkeepers. Wet and windy, but there were no dramas this time from the American. 7

Seamus Coleman: Struggled to create much going forward but was steady at the back against a dangerous opponent. 6

Phil Jagielka: An inspirational display defensively and carrying the ball forward. Leadership at its best. 8

Antolin Alcaraz: Presumably selected for his passing rather than his patchy defending. But his passing was abysmal. Distin’s exile difficult to understand. 5

Luke Garbutt: Got better and better as the night wore on. Bryan Oviedo and Leighton Baines have real competition for the left back berth. 7

Ross Barkley: Naively lost Gusev for the goal and struggled to have an impact in the final third. Replaced by Osman after 73 minutes. 6

James McCarthy: Not quite as commanding as usual, but still a big influence. Everton are much better with him. 7

Gareth Barry: Quietly very, very good. Disciplined, destructive, passed the ball effectively – and even avoided a yellow card. 8

Kevin Mirallas: Uneventful evening which lasted only 62 minutes before he was repolaced by Arouna Kone. 6

Steven Naismith: Too many of his passes almost found the intended target, but he remains the most reliable finisher in the Everton ranks. 7

Romelu Lukaku: Curled wide of an open goal from 40 yards, but showed immense strength and composure to create the chance for the equaliser and convert what could be a crucial penalty. 8

Substitutes: Kone (62 minutes) Threatened occasionally and looked bright 7 ; Osman (73 minutes) Only on for 17 minutes but typically influential 7 .
