Everton FC under-21s showed “guts, quality and real desire” in their thrilling draw with Fulham, says coach David Unsworth.

The Blues twice fought back from being behind to secure a 3-3 draw in their Premier League clash in Southport on Monday night.

Goals from David Henen and Joe Williams saw Everton draw level after conceding a quick-fire double early in the first-half before Jonjo Kenny’s strike made it 3-3 following another goal from Fulham.

Unsworth, though disappointed with his side’s “dodgy” start to the game, was thrilled with the manner in which they refused to give in.

The point keeps Everton in touch with the leaders in the table and they know a win in their game in hand will cut Southampton’s advantage to just two points.

“I thought it was a terrific game and a terrific performance to come back the way we did after a poor start to give Fulham a two-goal lead,” said Unsworth.

“It was full of determination, guts, quality, real desire and that never-say-die attitude that, for me, epitomises an Everton player.

“They didn’t know when they were beaten and that is the group we are working with. They have great quality but they also have great desire as well. When you are a coach and you stand on the side and you see that in your team, it’s great. There is a real honesty about the group. I like what I saw against Fulham.”

Everton are next in action on Monday night when they play host to Sunderland in the Premier League International Cup (7pm).

“I thought Fulham’s goals were quality – they hit us on the counter attack twice and showed a real pace about their play,” Unsworth added.

“But our goals were brilliant. The quality of the finishes for the first two then it is always nice to score from a set-piece for the third. A lot of stuff that we have been working on showed in the goals and that is always good to see.

“After a dodgy 15 minutes, to come back in that manner and playing the football that we did, it was great to watch.”
