Every week, the ECHO gets the views of an Everton FC fan to gauge the feeling among supporters of the week that’s been and the week ahead.

This week we spoke to Nick Ashcroft, of popular Toffees fan website, to get his views on a disappointing week for the Blues and the upcoming Merseyside derby.

First up, Roberto’s men crashed out of the league cup last night. How disappointed were you? Is it a big blow or a competition you could do without?

It’s always disappointing to lose games, especially in knock out competitions, but last night shows that our squad isn’t strong enough to carry us through 4 competitions this year. I’ve got the feeling Roberto Martinez might be throwing most of our resources at the league and Europa this season.

It’s the Merseyside derby on Saturday. Is it the worst time to go to Anfield or a great chance to put things right?

Given our recent history I would suggest it’s never a good time to go to Anfield. Neither team are in any kind of consistent form so maybe this is our chance to go there and get at them early on and see if we can get the crowd on their backs.

Liverpool are also conceding a lot of goals at the moment, do you think we are in for another high-scoring derby?

Two of the dodgiest looking defences in the league with an array of attacking talent on both sides. It could end up a rugby score but I’m going for a 1-1 draw with a hotly disputed red card for both sides. As betting goes this has both teams to score written all over it.

What lessons will Martinez hoped to have learned from last year’s Anfield derby?

Play our strongest team. Injuries dictated the line up last year but that just went to show that if you want to keep the fans happy you need to go all out to at least perform in a derby game. He really can’t afford to be tinkering with the team for this game.

How should the Toffees line up Saturday? Would you rather see John Stones in the heart of the defence? Should Eto’o start?

If we have to start with the same back four as Sunday then I would prefer to see Jagielka at right back and Stones in the middle alongside Distin. Stones will be a fantastic centre half for years to come but he isn’t a Premier League right back. I think think this would be a great game for Eto’o and Lukaku to start together, against an infinitely more expansive team than Crystal Palace. Hopefully there should be more space for them to operate in,

Any other business?

Yes. Can you wish Seamus Coleman a speedy recovery and ask if he has any identical brothers?
