LEIGHTON Baines hopes his selection for England’s Euro 2012 squad will dispel the “nonsense” regarding his supposed homesickness.

The left-back missed World Cup selection for South Africa two years ago at the expense of Aston Villa’s Stephen Warnock with reports around the time suggesting he found it difficult being away from his family.

But the 27-year-old has been picked in Roy Hodgson’s European Championships squad and believes that will now end all doubts.

He said: “Hopefully this puts all that nonsense to bed and we can move on from that. Because there was stuff that was said around that time that was really taken out of context. It will be nice to put that to bed.

“It’s one of those things that gets hyped up around tournament time when people are looking for news, I suppose.

“People who are gullible enough to believe everything they read, that’s up to them.

“That summer I spent three weeks with Everton in Australia. I’d have much rather of spent those three or four weeks at a World Cup. It wasn’t to be.

“But, as I say, if homesickness was ever an issue, I wouldn’t have been away with the club that long.”

Baines is attending his first major international tournament, having previously played for the under-21s, and is looking forward to the experience.

“Everything you hear, everyone in football has only got good things to say about Roy Hodgson,” he said.

“Our manager David Moyes spoke really highly of him as well to me and Phil Jagielka (who is on the stand-by list) and said what a really good manager he is and not only that, but what a really good guy he is as well.

“I’m looking forward to getting to know him and working with him.

“Getting that good preparation, a couple of friendlies, some good training and getting what’s necessary out of the next couple of weeks is what’s important now.

“Then, after that, we’ll just be fully focused on trying to keep a fully fit squad to take into the competition and we’ll be well prepared by then and ready to have a go at it.”

Meanwhile, Everton yesterday released six players after their contracts expired.

James McFadden and Marcus Hahnemann, both of whom arrived last season on short-term deals were allowed to leave, while youngsters Adam Davies, Connor Roberts, Aristote Nsiala, and Femi Orenuga have also departed.

In addition, Denis Stracqualursi and Royston Drenthe’s loan spells will come to an end on June 30, with neither player likely to be the subject of any further interest from the Blues.

Stracqulursi, 24, scored three goals since joining in January, and although impressing with his attitude and work-rate, did not display enough to persuade Moyes to bid for him permanently.

Drenthe, 25, had already been told to stay away from Finch Farm for disciplinary reasons, and is trying to engineer a return to former club Feyenoord.

CALL it a gut-feeling if you like, but I have a happy suspicion that Everton FC won’t suffer from a slow start to the next season.

It’s been a costly problem which has dogged them for too long, but as I watched the Toffees take Newcastle apart in the first-half at Goodison on Sunday, I began to feel positive about August already.

We’ve been here before of course, but the Magpies arrived a team on the brink of the Champions League and went back to the North East somewhat chastened to say the least.

As I said last week, I voted for Alan Pardew as manager of the year, but I was actually very disappointed with his side and would be concerned if I were a follower of the Toon Army because of the way they went through the motions.

They’ve had a marvellous season, but it sent an unsettling message for me the fashion in which his players seemed unable to match Everton’s bright attitude and tempo, as the Blues seemed the only ones not treating it like a typical end of season game.

The challenge for Pardew will be making sure that novelty factor of having Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba etc doesn’t dwindle over the summer, and that the whole team keeps its hunger.

It’s not likely to be as much of a problem for David Moyes judging by what we witnessed.

I was impressed by Everton’s attacking balance with Nikica Jelavic supported by Marouane Fellaini. I’ve written often about my preference for two strikers, but that combination works nicely with Fellaini’s aerial threat and good footballing brain. Maybe that’s the answer for next season. Either way there were some very promising signs that good times are on the horizon.
